How to Find the Right Paint Color

Painting Your HomeNeed a change but unsure of where to begin? Keep the furniture exactly where it is and look at your walls. With the change of seasons, what better time is there to try something new? Even a subtle swap of hues in a single room can make all of the difference. And if you’re a bit overwhelmed in where to start, we’ve compiled a few tips to help choose your new color.

First, always start with a small space like a short hallway, bathroom, or even an accent wall. This will be less costly to change later and will give you a realistic idea of what your new color will bring to the tone of your home. It sounds obvious, but consider what mood you’re trying to bring into each living space. Are you trying to keep a foyer light and airy, or warm and inviting? Would you like the bedroom to be calming and restful or dramatic?

Lighting matters. When looking at paint samples, be sure to test them under whichever light will be available in the room you’re working on. Natural light brings out the “truest” color, while fluorescent lights bring out blue tones. Incandescent lighting brings out warm reds and yellows.

Trying to communicate with your painter or paint supplier? Hue is the actual color, for example, blue or purple. Value is the lightness or darkness of that hue. Saturation is the dominance of the hue. For example, the saturation of a red hue lessens as your work from fire engine red to pink. Finally, intensity is the brilliance of a color.
