How to Clean and Store Your Painting Tools

A fresh coat of paint is on your walls and you’ve just started putting your room back together. But before you start to relax after a long few days of painting, you should first think about your painting tools. Namely, in order to extend the life of your tools, you need to be cleaning and storing them properly. Here’s how:

Step 1: Remove the Paint

How to Clean and Store Your Painting Tools

Your brushes and rollers will be covered with paint, and you’ll want to remove as much as you can before it dries. First, wipe away as much excess paint as you can and then wash your brushes with warm, soapy water. Be sure to wear rubber gloves as you do to prevent your hands from getting stained and then quickly rinse them until they’re free of paint. Although it is not recommended, if you’re in a hurry, you can wrap your brush in a plastic bag and push out all the air, then wash it at a more convenient time as above.

Step 2: Let them dry

Shake out the brush or roller to remove as much excess water as possible. Then pat them dry using a cloth or towel (being careful to preserve their original shape). At this point, any excess water should be removed, and you can now hang them to dry.

Step 3: Prep for storage

Once they’re fully dry, you next need to prep them for storage. The main purpose of this is to make sure that your brushes keep their original shape for however long it is until your next painting project. To do this, store your brushes in a vertical position with the bristles pointing up. For rollers, place them inside a plastic bag to protect them from dust and lint particles.
