Neutral Colors for Your Home

Neutral Colors for Your HomeNeutrals are in, and chances are, they always will be. Painting your home in neutral colors might sound simple, but it is a bit more complicated than simply choosing a white or off-white color. Plus, if you go with one neutral color throughout the home, it could give it a bit of an impersonal feel. Here are some tips for choosing neutral colors for your home that will leave your home feeling comfy and looking modern.

What is Neutral?

First of all, let’s define what a “neutral” color is: Hey There Home says it’s not necessarily white, but rather a light to medium color that works well with other colors. The trick is to choose a neutral that has an undertone that will work with the rest of your décor.

What is an Undertone?

Unfamiliar with undertones? That’s okay. To identify an undertone, all you have to do is look at the darkest color on a paint swatch. Whatever that color is, whether it’s black, brown, blue, yellow, or brown, is the undertone for the color you chose.

Samples, Samples, Samples

Make sure you are sampling paint colors before you permanently paint your home with them. Hold swatches up against your furniture. Looking at samples against white walls will make the sample appear lighter, and, according to the Washington Post, often causes people to choose a color that is much too light.

Experiment with Shades

Once you have a color in mind, consider painting surrounding rooms in the same tone, but in a softer shade. It’ll give your home some depth and intrigue, and you won’t have to worry about picking out clashing colors for the rest of the home.

Don’t Forget the Baseboards

Make sure to refresh your baseboards after you paint: a fresh neutral coat with the same scuffed up baseboards will only revamp your room a little bit. Make sure to paint baseboards over again in order to make the fresh coat of paint standout.
