Why Paint Cracks, Bubbles and Peels

Painting Tips We all know how frustrating it is when you notice that the paint in your home is cracking, bubbling or peeling. Why does it happen, and what can you do about it?

Why is my paint bubbling?

Bubbling is caused by a lack of adhesion between the paint and its surface, usually triggered by moisture and/or air. Common mistakes that lead to bubbling include:

  • You shook the can of paint, introducing excess air.
  • You forgot to use sealant or primer on a porous material, like brick or sheetrock.
  • You layered an oil-based paint on top of a latex paint.
  • You painted on a hot, humid day.

Why is my paint peeling?

Untreated bubbling paint will eventually peel, too. Peeling, like bubbling, is the result of poor adhesion. Sanding a smooth surface will make it easier for paint to adhere. Common causes of peeling include:

  • You painted in a humid environment.
  • There was a chemical incompatibility, such as using oil-based paint on a metal surface.
  • You painted on a glossy, slick or hard surface without first sanding it.

Why is my paint cracking?

Possible causes include:

  • The paint was applied too thickly.
  • The surface was dirty.
  • You applied new coats of paint before the previous coats had completely dried.
